Saara Kaathu in Saaru's Naakku!!

This song by Vairamuthu sir, has been so captivating that i fail to get it out of system. I seem to be like a man possessed with this song and got hooked to its simple, yet elegant lyrics, of a longing lover's innocent expression of her crush...since this girl is from the country side and has earthy experiences, her metaphors to express her love too are rooted in this milieu. These are the occasions that i just can't stop appreciating Vairamuthu sir, for coming up with such lyrics. Ghibraan along with Chinmayi (thanga naga vaangi tharattuma? :)) have created sheer magic in composition and rendition. Vemal and Ineya too played out well on screen.

My very modest attempt at translation started with this lyrics. I thank Kavitha Muralidharan for the encouragement and Gladwin who egged me to come up with better translation, closer to the meter of the Tamil original. Please be brutal when it comes to criticism, if you happen to pass by this blog. Importantly spread the  word :)

Sara Sara Saara Kathu Veesum Pothum
Sir ah Paarthu Paesum Pothum
Sara Paambu Pola Nenju Saththam Poduthey..
Sara Sara Saara Kathu Veesum Pothum
Sir ah Paarthu Paesum Pothum
Sara Paambu Pola Nenju Saththam Poduthey..

When the cloud of misty mist breezes past
I run into a prattle with sire,
Rat snake rattles my heart at that moment ,
Ambling through, hissing with strange sounds (2)

Ithu Ithu Ithu Pona Nenju Thaika
Otha Paarva Paarthu Sella Moththa Sotha
Ezhuthi Thaaraen Moochu Utpada..
Ithu Ithu Ithu Pona Nenju Thaika
Otha Paarva Paarthu Sella Moththa Sotha
Ezhuthi Thaaraen Moochu Utpada..

My fray, frayed heart needs your lustful gaze, to seam it back in position
And you take all that I have in return, my breath even (2)

Tea, Pola Nee.. Enna Aen, Aathura..

Why do you caress me like the hot tea,
Blown lukewarm by the expert hands of tea vendor

Sara Sara Saara Kathu Veesum Pothum
Sir ah Paarthu Paesum Pothum
Sara Paambu Pola Nenju Saththam Poduthey
..

When the cloud of misty mist breezes past
I run into a prattle with sire,
My heart rattles like a rat snake,
Ambling through, hissing with strange sounds

Enga Ooru Pudikutha? Enga Thaani Inikutha?
Suthi Varum Kaathula, Suttu Eeral Manakutha?
Mutta Kozhi Pudikava, Moonu Padi Samaikava?
Eembugal Kadikaiyil, Enna Konjam Ninaikava?

Does my land fascinate you? Does the water here taste like elixir?
Do you smell the aroma, of the fried liver, wafting through the country side?
Should i cull a country chicken, and serve you gourmet native dishes?
And when you feast on the tendons, will it remind you of me?

Kamman Soaru Rusikava, Šamacha Kaiya Kønjam Rasikava..
Mødakathan Rasam Vachi Madakathaan Paakuraen..
Retta Dhøsa Šuttu Vachi, Kaava Kaakuraen..
Mukkanna Nøngu Thaan Vekkiraen..
Mandu Nee Kagayen Kaetkura..

Feel the pearl millet that I served, and taste the hands which served you
Trying in vain to entice you with rasam of vine balloon leaves
Twin Dosas too I made, to allure you
But all you are interested is in the palm shell
When I am the 3 eyed palm fruit served you full, you fool!

Šara Šara Šaara Kathu Veesum Pøthum
Šir ah Paarthu Paesum Pøthum
Šara Paambu Pøla Nenju Šaththam Pøduthey..

When the cloud of misty mist breezes past
I run into a prattle with sire,
My heart rattles like a rat snake,
Ambling through, hissing with strange sounds

Pullu Kattu Vaasama, Buthi Kulla Veesura..
Maatu Mani Šaththama, Mansakul Kaetkura..
Kattavandi Oattura, Kaiyalavu Manasula..
Kai Èzhuthu Pødura Kanni Pønnu Maarbula...

The remnants of your memory, linger like the smell of fresh wet grass field
The constant chime of your thoughts, ring in my ears like the cow’s bell
My fist size heart beats, when your hands drive like a slow bullock cart
Imprinting your signature, on my virgin breasts

Møønu Naala Paakala.. Oøril Èntha Pøøvum Pøøkala..
Aatu Kallu Kuliyila Urangi Pøvøam Pøønayai..
Thanna Vanthu Parthuthan Kirangi Pørenya
Meenuku Aengura Køkku Nee..
Køthavae Theriyala Makku Nee..

My eyes missed you for days...and flowers of this land failed to blossom!
I, kitten like cuddle inside the niche of grinding stone
Longing to see you, only to retreat in embarrassment, upon sighting you
You lust for flesh, as stork longs for fish
Only to miss like a silly stork failing to peck its prey

Šara Šara Šaara Kathu Veesum Pøthum
Šir ah Paarthu Paesum Pøthum
Šara Paambu Pøla Nenju Šaththam Pøduthey..
Šara Šara Šaara Kathu Veesum Pøthum
Šir ah Paarthu Paesum Pøthum
Šara Paambu Pøla Nenju Šaththam Pøduthey..
Ithu Ithu Ithu Pøna Nenju Thaika
Otha Paarva Paarthu Šella Møththa Šøtha
Èzhuthi Thaaraen Møøchu Utpada..
Ithu Ithu Ithu Pøna Nenju Thaika
Otha Paarva Paarthu Šella Møththa Šøtha
Èzhuthi Thaaraen Møøchu Utpada..
Tea, Pøla Nee.. Ènna Aen, Aathura..

When the cloud of misty mist breezes past
I run into a prattle with sire,
My heart rattles like a rat snake,
Ambling through, hissing with strange sounds
My fray, frayed heart needs your lustful gaze, to seam it back in position
And you take all that I have in return, my breath even
Why do you caress me like the hot tea,
Blown lukewarm by the expert hands of tea vendor

Kaatu Malligai Pøøthirukuthu Kaathala Kaathala
Vanthu Vanthu Oadipøgum Vandukenna Kaachala..

The wild jasmines blossom, is it in love?
The bees keep buzzing, is it incoherent, indecisive?

This blog really helped me to write this translation.
